SHAAN BAINS explores the power of language and the restrictions that can limit our speech. He uses mainly oil paint, pencil and etching, drawing upon inspiration from artists such as John Sokol and Barbara Kruger.

“In our society the influence of media shapes our ideas and our words, in some cases even censoring our speech. This infringement upon our freedom of expression calls upon the theme of identity as we ultimately become a reflection of the language that surrounds us. My work considers the power of language through a visual element, exploring its abuse and its effect on people.”
