A poem by JAMES FAIRHEAD.

And now the interlocking overlap
behind the silent eyes and silent minds –
that frayed echo of ‘lekker slaap
liefie’ and ‘مساء الخير’ – unwinds
complacent Tristan chords. Our heads reclined
against familiar nooks and matted hair,
Pablo-contortions, bodies undefined
yet separate – Rhythm return to me and dare
betray the syncopation, now declare
our new unwieldy harmony a voice
without a mouth, a bond without an heir!
Emerge calm peace! Antidote the noise-
-some, noxious, cruel suspense and words dispel
this lukewarm halt, this injured lover’s hell!
