Tasting Shorthand

A poem by CALVIN LAW.

Time

year by year

window fastening shut

rhyme

running out.

And with it a fear

‘That I have lost out

on that montage

of’

espying

afar

from a window ajar

from quite the wrong side.

Forever tasting shorthand

from others, their

sweet success and its

smell

‘But dive back

into looking forth.

This very long sort of longing

does not bemoan the end.

The window’s fastening shut

but there’s always another way out.’

The door not forever locked.

There’s still life yet in those glances.
