PORTIA VELARDE uses a photocopier to create art that addresses the concept of the ‘Revolting Youth’.
Portia gained recognition this year when she and five other students performed an Art Heist at the Scottish National Gallery, successfully stealing a painting (Portrait of Cecilia Margaret Kobke) in order to gain an internship.
In her artwork she attempts to communicate a feeling of unease and disorientation, based loosely on the article “The Ghost Rapes of Bolivia”. She looks to portray a warped sense of ones surroundings and reality, for example, if you look closely within the distorted forest you can see figures in the trees.
The dual meaning of revolting – to mean either disgusting or to act in revolt – is intentional and prevalent in Portia’s work.
