The Light Thieves

A poem by LILY MARTIN.

We’re the light thieves,

We come in the dark,

We take your light beams and hide them for a lark.

We whisper incantations that take the bright away,

We store it in our pockets:

‘SHUSH!’ We say, ‘Darkness plays today!!’

Slipping through cracks of silence,

Digging deep dark holes,

Snickering at you, the oblivious,

As we take away your gold.

We quiver at the thought of light,

We crave it oh so much,

We can’t wait to caress your hope and happiness,

Oh how it makes us gush.

We wander amongst the towns and cities of dreams,

We scale walls and those tall evergreens –

We’re looking for you,

We’re looking for you, you pulsating light beam.

So hide in the darkness that craves to play,

Hide that little pocket of light in shade,

You’ll rue the day once it goes away!

Grab that flicker of light and lock it in a cage.

Hide that little ember of yours,

That little glimmering spell,

Hide it in your pocket,

Stuff it down the well.

Or maybe! Just to be clever,

You’ll try and stuff it down your throat –

Open wide! we wouldn’t want you to choke!

We want you smiling when we come to play,

Eyes still glimmering from the day.

We want you happy, this is our ploy –

I’ll stick my hand down your throat,

Pull your life out just for joy.

But don’t be afraid, no!

That’ll take the game away –

Don’t you be afraid; we’ll not come for you today.

We’ll come when you least expect,

When you’re mad at your wife or kids or have just left stuff unsaid,

We’ll snatch that little light from you,

We’ll hold it up in front of you before devouring it like bread.

We will enjoy your little morsel

And watch the light drain from your eyes,

Yup, you guessed it – this isn’t a children’s rhyme.

We’re the light thieves,

We come in the dark,

We take your light beams and hide them for a lark.

We whisper incantations that take the bright away,

We store it in our pockets:

‘SHUSH!’ We say, ‘Darkness plays today!!’

Hide your light,

Hide your spark,

The light thieves have arrived in the dark.
