Five friends seek the source of their passion for the blues in the deep south, in ‘Blues Before Sunrise’, a film by ALEX REBIEZ, CYRUS HAYLEY, ALEX KOLSTER, TOM POMPHREY and GIUSEPPE PIGNATTI.
‘We are five friends from the United Kingdom who set out on a journey to seek the source of our passion for Delta Blues.
Our journey took us to the deep south of the United States.
As strangers to this land, we found truth in southern hospitality.
Embraced by eight rugged Delta Blues men and their communities, we soaked in the authenticity and power of their music and raw indescribable talent.
Shot over the course of two years in the Great States of Mississippi and Tennesse, this film is a snapshot of a place stuck in time which captures a few of the remaining authentic, rugged Delta Blues men and their intensely personal and powerful music.
Their roots lead directly back to Robert Johnson, Howl’n Wolf, Muddy Waters, and a time when pick’n cotton under the radiating heat of the southern United States sky birthed what we now call the blues.
Whether using four-string diddley-bows made of recycled tool boxes, or a harmonica picked from a box littered with old dusty and worn down pieces of metal, the humanity and passion of the music encompasses the milky, raw, and organic sounds that changed the world forever.’
Special Thanks to Tony Porter and George Wilkins.
Blues Before Sunrise will be screened at Off The Cuff in Herne Hill on Sunday 3rd April.
